Service Description

In a 2010 report by the Army Pain Management Task Force, Acupuncture is in its list of recommendations to address chronic pain. Chronic pain is defined as pain lasting more than 3 months. Conventional treatment of chronic pain relies on Opioids and presents risks of misuse, as well as adverse side-effects including Nausea, Constipation, Respiratory depression, Drowsiness, and Cognitive impairment. These effects can impair performance while failing to relieve pain fully, leading to an overall decrease in military readiness. A study revealed that long term antidepressants, such as SSRI therapy, presents troubling adverse side-effects such as sexual dysfunction, weight gain, and sleep disturbance. In contrast, studies have found that Acupuncture was encouraging and had statistically significant effects for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and emotional trauma. According to two studies, Acupuncture was reported to be relatively safe and that there were no serious adverse events reported in a total of 66,229 treatment sessions.
